Glass plate from the Domien Sleeckx collection (1818-1901), a man of many talents: teacher, politician, author, journalist and artist.
The picture, taken from daguerrotypes, was probably taken by Liege painter and photographer André-François-Joseph Dupont (1828-1885), active in Antwerp from 1853. The Letterenhuis owns 12 daguerrotypes (these were previously restored and digitised), all from the Sleeckx collection. They are images of Sleeckx and his family around 1850/1860. The Letterenhuis holds Sleeckx's archive, letters, manuscripts, photographs and paintings
